Intro to Backcountry Skiing
A comprehensive look at the ins and outs of uphill and downhill travel. Join our experienced guides as we dive into the details on a mellow level.
Format: 1 indoor free climb and briefing session + 1 full outdoor field day
Max group size: 6 students (1:6 guide ratio)
Pre-req:
Must be a competent downhill skier
Some backcountry experience a plus but not necessary
Course Progression:
Day 1 Bouldering Project Meetup: Chat in the Library with an intro discussion on systems and a course briefing.
Day 2 Cannon Mountain - Side Country and assess ski systems and movement
Day 3: Mellow day, such as the Sherby and rails, to get some experience. Talk about snow packs and all the dangers associated with them
Day 4: A day in the Mountains
Course Purpose
The purpose of this course is to bring one's recreational backcountry skiing to a level of self-competence. At least getting to the point where you are interested in diving deeper into education, or not.
Skiing in general is a world in which education and experience make the
Technical Competence.
By the end of the program, students will be able to:
Lead Climb more confidently indoors.
Understanding outside climbing systems
Move securely and confidently on TR and Lead (Progression)
Belay outdoors with competence (including anchor-based belays).
Make informed decisions about risk, weather, and route choice.
Practice stewardship and ethics as members of the climbing community.
Practice excellent Expedition Behavior

Transportation from Boston to the Crag.
Technical climbing gear (ropes, draws, spare helmets).

Fruit & light snacks.
Professional instruction (SPI (at least) and WFR-certified guides).
